7 road-safety habits every Indian family should practise

2 min read

Most road accidents don't happen on long trips. They happen on the short, everyday rides — to school, the market, or the office. A few small habits can make a big difference.

1. Helmet on, strap locked

A helmet only works if it stays on your head. Always lock the chin strap, even for a two-minute ride. Children on two-wheelers need their own properly fitting helmet too.

2. Seat belts in the back seat as well

Rear-seat passengers are often forgotten. In a sudden stop, an unbelted passenger can hurt themselves and the people in front. Make "belt first, then start" a family rule.

3. Put the phone away

A single glance at the phone at 40 km/h means you travel more than 10 metres without looking at the road. If a call is important, stop safely first.

4. Slow down near schools, markets and junctions

These are places where children and pedestrians appear suddenly. Driving a little slower costs you seconds, not minutes.

5. Keep emergency numbers handy

Save 112 (all emergencies) and 108 (ambulance) in every family member's phone. On national highways, 1033 connects you to highway help. Our Emergency helplines page keeps them one tap away.

6. Make it easy for strangers to help you

If you're ever in an accident and can't speak, the people who reach you first won't know who your family is. A safety QR sticker on your vehicle lets anyone scan and alert your family with your location — without your phone number being written for everyone to see.

7. Talk about it at home

Tell your family what to do if they get a call about an accident: stay calm, note the location, and call 112 if help hasn't been called yet.
